1000 BCE: Introducing the Forest of the Future

The Ottawa Valley's forests now resemble those of the 21st century. Some trees flourish and others dwindle, depending on local soil and climatic conditions. Pine, oak and poplar occur throughout much of the valley. They have an unusual ally: fire. These trees benefit from the open, competition-free growing conditions created by burns.
